Role of TMT Bars in Constructing a Stable Structure

Steel bars were a game-changer when it came to increasing the structural integrity of buildings! These days, TMT bars have increasingly become the number one option for construction projects. With its advanced technology giving it extra strength, flexibility, and weldability – it’s certainly not a surprise!

Lightweight & Strong

Gone are the days where iron or even timber made up the foundation of buildings. These days, it’s all steel, and it’s not hard to see why! Steel is around 1,000 times stronger than iron in it’s purest form, and the treatment of TMT bars creating a hard martensite layer has made it even stronger. 

TMT bars are also a lot more lightweight than regular steel bars, so your structure will need less steel. This effectively makes your building more cost-efficient and stronger – a real win-win situation!

Tight Bond with Concrete & Cement

An interesting fact about TMT bars is that they are hot-rolled, while still molten, to create the twin-ribbing on the rods. While it may be aesthetically pleasing, the dual-ribbing isn’t just for show! It is actually responsible for the bond between the steel rod and concrete. 

This contributes massively to the structural integrity of a building. If there is any gap in the bond, it would lead to widening over time. Ultimately, it would result in cracks forming on the outside of your structure, a big no-no. 

Flexibility

Thanks to its soft inner ferrite-pearlite core, TMT bars are more flexible and ductile than other steel rods. This is an especially useful quality if you’re trying to test the limits of architectural innovation and create something spectacular. 

More importantly, this added flexibility means TMT bars give additional structural stability in the case of natural disasters. Thanks to its extreme strength and ductility TMT bars are earthquake resistant, as they can take additional bending and buckling without failing the structural integrity of the building. 

Uniformity Weight & Roundness of the Bars

TMT bars get their even weight and roundness from the pre-stressed strands on the rolling mill. This uniformity is extremely important as steel bars carry a pretty heavy load. If the weight of the bar is unevenly dispersed, weak areas will permanently deform under the stress of the concrete, hampering its structural integrity.
