hot rolled steel grades and their uses

Hot Rolled Steel: Grades and Uses

October 11, 2023 by VRKP in Steel Industry

When it comes to hot-rolled steel, it’s not a one-size-fits-all affair. The spectrum of grades in hot-rolled steel caters to specific needs and applications. Whether you’re fabricating metal structures, building automobile bodies, or crafting furniture, there’s a hot-rolled steel grade that’s just right for the job. So, let’s discover some of the most widely used hot-rolled steel grades.

A36: The All-Purpose Workhorse

We kick things off with A36, the darling of hot-rolled steel grades. What makes it so popular? Well, it’s all about that magical trifecta: weldability, machinability, and excellent mechanical properties. Whether you’re crafting bars, channels, angles, plates, tubes, or shafts, A36 has your back.

C1010 and C1018: Formability Meets Workability

If formability, machinability, and weldability are high on your list, C1010 and C1018 are your go-to grades. They are more flexible than their high-carbon counterparts. The primary difference? Carbon content. C1010 leans in with 0.08% to 0.13% carbon content by weight, while C1018 packs a bit more punch with 0.14% to 0.20% carbon content by weight.

A1011: The Versatile Performer

Need a hot-rolled steel grade that can do it all? Enter A1011. This versatile steel is the best choice for automobile bodies, metal fabrication, and sheet metal structural applications. It’s a reliable workhorse for a multitude of tasks.

C1026: The AISI Designation

C1026 carries the AISI designation and offers mechanical and chemical properties strikingly like A36, but with a slightly lower carbon content. It’s the choice for crafting furniture, automotive components, and various structures. It’s all about finding the right balance.

A500: The Tubing Specialist

When it’s all about tubing, A500 is the specialist you turn to. This low-carbon alloy excels in tube applications, ensuring that your tubing projects stand tall and strong.

C1045: Strength in Medium-Carbon

C1045 joins the medium-carbon club, offering greater strength in the hot-rolled steel lineup. It’s perfect for applications where you need that extra power.

C1141: Machinability Enhanced

As C1141 steps into the spotlight, this medium-carbon hot-rolled steel grade is a machinability champion. Thanks to added manganese and sulphur, it’s a breeze to machine, making your fabrication projects more efficient.
