Everyone uses steel in one form or the other. From the tap, we open to wash our faces in the morning to the door lock and key with which we secure our good sleep – steel is an integral part of our daily lives and, to date, does not have an equally good competent to beat in price and longevity. The facts less known about steel can be even more fascinating. Let’s check out some of them.

  1. It is generally believed that China was the first country to mass produce high-quality steel. Chinese steel production dates back to the 2nd century BC, and mass production began in the 3rd century AD.
  2. Recycling steel conserves 120 pounds of limestone, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 2,500 pounds of iron ore per ton.
  3. In the 3rd century BC, craftsmen of south India used crucibles to smelt wrought iron to make Wootz steel.
  4. The Iron Pillar of Delhi, built in roughly 402 AD, is the oldest example of corrosion-resistant steel.
  5. As the population grows, steel use will increase 1.5 times by 2050.
  6. Car bodies have a 12-year guarantee against corrosion.
  7. The Brooklyn Bridge was the first steel suspension bridge. It was opened to the public in the 1880s. 
  8. The Eiffel Tower expands 6.75 inches during summer.
  9. Globally, steel is one of the most recycled materials, with a recycling rate of over 60%.
  10. Nearly 18 million households can run for almost a year on the energy saved by recycling steel.
  11. Steel is highly in demand in the fashion industry.
  12. A new steel product is believed to have 30% recycled content.
  13. There are 3500 plus grades of steel with different chemical and physical properties designed for specific uses.
